Skippyjon Jones Review

A few weeks ago was approached to review a series of Skippyjon Jones books currently be offered at Kohl's for their Kohl's Care Campaign.  If you aren't aware of this campaign you are missing out! Kohl's will offer children's books and matching stuff animals for $5 to $10 each.  100% of the net profits are then donated to different kids' health causes.  I've gotten several books and stuffed animals through this.  My 5 year old son's current favorite is the animal from the great Dr. Seuss book Put Me in the Zoo.

Well I jumped at the chance to review and promote this cause.

Here's how it arrived!

And here is what was inside:

Move over, Eloise and Olivia. Make room for SkippyjonJones, a Siamese kittenboy who can't resign himself to being an ordinary cat. Having a time-out in his room, he resorts to his imagination. Taking on the superhero persona of the great Spanish sword fighter Skippito, he has the adventure of his life, and readers are invited along. Zany, wild, and over-the-top, this utterly original book truly begs to be read aloud.

I'll be honest - I had seen Skippyjon Jones books around, but I had never bought any or read any to my son.   I was missing out!  What fun books about a cute little big eared Siamese cat that morph's into his alter ego El Skippito while in a time-out.  Each book takes him on a different adventure having him roll in and out of crazy trouble.  What I really love his how they show kids the power of imagination - something a think can be lacking these days.  Although he may be in a time-out that never stops Skippyjon from "leaving" his room and going to far away places like ancient Egypt.  What I also love is that although Skippyjon does get into trouble (he is after-all in a time out!), he's not cruel or mean.  Actually El Skippito is a fantastically heroic character helping out friends.  Great role model for little kids.

All in all these are fun, fun books that my 5 year really enjoys.  And I love that the stuffed Skippyjon Jones you can buy.  It lets the child really bring the character more into their life.  The package I received also had a sock monkey.  My 13 year old daughter snatched it up, and I've never seen it again!

Lastly - these aren't books that just kids love.  I posted a picture on Facebook showing the books.  So many of my friends had to comment on how much they loved these books!  I believe a great children's book should appeal to the kid in all of us!

Kohl's is still selling this series, so if you know the series and love it - check it out.  If you've never read one before, head on over.  $5 for a hardcover book plus helping a great cause - you can't go wrong!

Wait there's more!!!!!

Also in the box was two other books:

Love this series because it shows you the healthier choices.  The first section is all the healthier choices at different restaurant.  Now I have the version for adults, so I was really curious about what it would show for kids.  I was pretty surprised at a few.  What I thought would be the healthier choice turned out not to be!
Also included are ways to make kids' favorite healthier (mac & cheese) and how to get kids moving more.
I'll be using this book a ton with my own three kids!

I haven't used any of the recipes yet but as we head back to school I know I'll be using a ton of them! I especially like the section title "Double Duty".  The left-overs from the first recipe start the second one! I so need things like that!!

These two are also available at Kohl's so if you're looking for ways to find your family healthier check them out!

  1. Skippyjon Jones is the ultimate book to read aloud with your kids. My second grader has adored them since preschool. He also loves the books that come with CDs. He'll disappear into his room and listen to them over and over again. Then he'll spend the rest of the day quoting them.

  2. Boy, you really made a killing at Kohl's! Do they have anything *left* in the book section? ;-) And I didn't know there was an "Eat This, Not That," for kids!! Thanks for pointing it out.
