Picture Book Review: Sidewalk Flowers by JonArno Lawson

Title: Sidewalk Flowers
Author: JonArno Lawson
Illustrator: Sydney Smith

In this wordless picture book, a little girl collects wildflowers while her distracted father pays her little attention. Each flower becomes a gift, and whether the gift is noticed or ignored, both giver and recipient are transformed by their encounter.

I'm a sucker for picture books with no words and this is a beautiful example of how wonderful they can be.  Here's this little girl seeing the small bits of color and beauty as she walks along with her father.  Then she shares them with those around her - she literally brings color to others.  You see as the story goes along it goes from back and white to full color just as she is spreading the bits of color she found.  Simple.  Amazing.  Perfect.  I cannot wait to use this one with my students.  I've got tons of ideas for what we can do.  I think they'll love it as well because there is so much for them to see, uncover and explore.  Wonderful book.
