Ghosts - Yes! Suspense - Yes! Review: Dead Girls of Hysteria Hall by Katie Alender

Title: Dead Girls of Hysteria Hall
Author: Katie Alender

In this asylum, your mind plays tricks on you all the time…

Delia’s new house isn’t just a house. Long ago, it was the Piven Institute for the Care and Correction of Troubled Females—an insane asylum nicknamed “Hysteria Hall.” However, many of the inmates were not insane, just defiant and strong willed. Kind of like Delia herself.

But the house still wants to keep “troubled” girls locked away. So, in the most horrifying way, Delia gets trapped.

And that’s when she learns that the house is also haunted.

Ghost girls wander the halls in their old-fashioned nightgowns. A handsome ghost boy named Theo roams the grounds. Delia finds that all the spirits are unsettled and full of dark secrets. The house, as well, harbors shocking truths within its walls—truths that only Delia can uncover, and that may set her free.

But she’ll need to act quickly, before the house’s power overtakes everything she loves.

So lately I've been reading suspenseful/scary books.  I LOVE books like that and have ready many throughout the years.  So it's pretty easy for a book of this genre to disappoint me.  This was not the case for Dead Girls! I really enjoyed it.

Now at first I wasn't so  sure.  I was like - seriously how is this book ever going to build on what has happened! I honestly couldn't see it and thought the book had took a huge wrong turn in my opinion.  I was quickly  proven wrong! Yes I'm being vague, but I don't want to spoil it for you!

What I will talk about are the ghost girls.  I really liked them! Each one was unique and brought something new to the story.  My favorite was Eliza.  She became so strong and confident.  I loved watching that.  Some of the side character ghosts like the twins were cool.  They added to the story in a way I didn't see coming.

I also liked Delia's sister Jamie.  At first I thought she was a brat, but I came to see that she really wasn't and she was probably the strongest and bravest person in the family.  90% of what she did I could've never done!

Probably the only part of the story that lacked a little for me was the mystery behind the ghosts.  It came together really well, but I do think that could've been a bit stronger.

Over-all:  Fun ghost story that strongly held my attention!

  1. I used to read a lot of scary books, but I just don't any more. I think I'm getting too old and they really bother me. This one sounds like it would make me lay awake, but I have plenty of friends who would like to know about it. I will pass the word. Thanks for the review.
