Book Review: Beautiful Lies

Title: Beautiful Lies
Author: Jessica Warman

Rachel and Alice are an extremely rare kind of identical twins-so identical that even their aunt and uncle, whom they've lived with since their parents passed away, can't tell them apart. But the sisters are connected in a way that goes well beyond their surfaces: when one experiences pain, the other exhibits the exact same signs of distress. So when one twin mysteriously disappears, the other immediately knows something is wrong-especially when she starts experiencing serious physical traumas, despite the fact that nobody has touched her. As the search commences to find her sister, the twin left behind must rely on their intense bond to uncover the truth. But is there anyone around her she can trust, when everyone could be a suspect? And ultimately, can she even trust herself?

My Review
Wow.  Just wow.  This book was amazing! WARNING: Book Gushing Ahead

Where do I start?  How about the beginning.  I will admit that for the first few pages I wasn't sure about the book.  The characters - Alice and Rachel - seemed kinda.....odd, and I didn't know if I'd like them and in turn the book.  I did NOT need to worry.  I loved it.  But here's the kicker - I really can't tell you much about it because I fear spoiling it for you.  It has so many twists and turns and "What!?!?" moments, and you need to experience them fresh.  Here's what I can say, my mind could not leave the plot alone.  I had to know.  I had to find the answers. I couldn't let it go.  Here's how I explained it to a few people:  It was like I was handed a ton of puzzle pieces in a gallon bag.  There was no box, no picture to follow.  They were dumped in front of me and I had to figure it out.  So I'd start putting pieces together and think I had it only to add one more piece and bam changed again.  I'd be like - just a few more pieces, and I'll take a break.  But I couldn't! I had to keep working at it.  I couldn't let it go!

As for not liking Alice and Rachel at the start.......Jessica Warman did an amazing job bringing these twins to life.  They became living breathing characters that I cared about, was frustrated with and wanted to see them come through this.  I still think about both of them.

In the end this book is a mystery about the missing twin, but it's more than that.  It's about the fact that as well as we know people they are still always a mystery to us, because we never really know what is happening inside themselves.  And that was amazing to watch and learn.

Final Thought: Don't think you know what's going to happen.
Best stick-with-you image: So many - too many
Best for readers who: Like a book that keeps you thinking
Age Group:  Upper YA

For the Guys? Would guys like this? Stereotypically no.  The main characters are girls and there are very few boys in the story.  So with that I think no it's not.

  1. Definitely sounds original, and I love the whole sister-bond angle. I had a feeling you were going to love it even as I read the blurb!
