Watchya Readin'? (3)

In Watchya Readin' Wednesday I share what my students are reading. This allows me to focus on what's really going on in the reading life of 7th graders. Hint hint - any publisher or authors reading, this is what 7th graders are REALLY reading not what I, the teacher, WANT them to read :) Let's get started on this week's addition!

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
Bone series by Jeff Smith
Perfect (2 students) by by Natasha Friend
The Skin I'm In by Sharon G. Flake
The Face on the Milk Carton by Caroline B. Cooney
The Ranger Apprentice by John Flanagan
Anne Frank Life in Hiding by Johanna Hurwitz
Everlost by Neil Shusterman
ttyl by Lauren Myracle
City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
Mudville by Kurtis Scaletta
Scat by Carl Hiaasen
Skinny by Ibi Kaslik
Graceling by Kristin Cashore
Chicken Soup for the Kid's Soul

Once again I am completely floored by the variety of books my students read. Scat, The Face on the Milk Carton and The Ranger Apprentice are long time favorites.  Everlost, City of Ashes, Skinny and Graceling are new-comers.  What's really sad is that I've only read 3 on the list!

  1. I am surprised that 7th graders are reading some of the content on there....not that they couldn't handle the level of reading, but maybe the maturity level of some of the topics....hmmm

  2. That's the interesting part of 7th graders (or middle schooler) - the varying levels of maturity. Some are really ready for more serious topics and some aren't.

  3. I must say that a 7th grader reading My Sister's Keeper just floors me. I read the book in high school and cried like crazy during it (one of the only books to ever make me cry). You must have some very mature 7th graders there :)
